Egypt is an African nation. During the French invasion of Egypt, Napoleon captured much of Egypt, but was halted by the Battle of the Nile. The Egyptian campaign was a military failure but a cultural success. The Rosetta Stone was found by French engineer Captain Pierre-François Bouchard, and French scholar Jean-François Champollion was able to read the ancient hieroglyphic words in the stone for time in thousands of years. When Napoleon invaded Egypt in 1798, he brought along an 'army' of scholars, whose studies of this ancient culture became the foundation of modern Egyptology.
